The success of any knitting project starts by choosing the proper knitting needle. The right knitting needles determines what the stitches look like and how much you actually enjoy knitting. The more you enjoy it, the more you will knit and the better you will become.

Knitting is a hobby that is popular throughout the world and although many can find it creative and relaxing it can also be a very difficult hobby if the tools used are not of the best standard. The size of the needles also affects your stitches as well as your finished product so you must choose the right needle size to use.

Knitting needle conversion charts can guide you on choosing the right needle. In beginning your first knitting project, you will tend to buy different types of needles in which you can use for your own style. There are many types of needles available to use, some are made of aluminum and some are made of bamboo. But the more exotic materials are used for the needle, the more expensive it becomes. It is fun to use different needle sizes because you will discover the different designs you can do with those needles.

Knitting needles have different sizes depending on its type. US and UK don’t have the same measurement for needles. This is proved by the knitting needle conversion charts available here. You can search for it and look for the difference that will serve as your guide in choosing the right measurement of needle that you need for your project. As advised by a knitting expert, beginners should not use over-sized needle because it is easier to slide the stitches and they can go on fully without having a hard time.

Best Plastic Knitting Needles

Plastic needles are fairly lightweight and flexible. They will flex a lot on smaller sizes if they are holding a lot of stitches and/or weight from heavier yarns such as cotton. They will normally quickly go back to their original shape. I personally prefer this type of needle. I have tried all of them and always end up coming back to the classic plastic.

Metal needles cost slightly more than the plastic variety. They are obviously very strong and come in very long lengths to hold large amounts of stitches and can take the weight of heavy wools. They don’t flex and can be very unyielding to knit with giving aches and pains after a long knitting session.

Bamboo needles grip the wool which to a new user of these needles is very strange after the slip you get on metal and plastic needles. These needles also bend into quite an arc at time of knitting which is a bit disconcerting the first time you use them but they do revert back to straight when you stop using them.

Unlike other wooden needles they do not arc and stay straight all the time. They have a small amount of slip. They also have fairly sharp points, ideal for intricate pattern work. They do not come in very small sizes, 3mm/UK11 seems to be the smallest. Again, this type of needle is kinder to the hands/joints, which is great if you have arthritis or hand issues.
